Henfield, Sussex

Hand-shaped Vessels, Community Thrown.

In our Sussex studio, we celebrate the quiet joy of clay, crafting small-batch stoneware and fostering connection through tactile creation.

Our Roots

From Clay to Kiln: Our Henfield Story

Founded by women passionate about tactile creation and slow living, Henfield Pottery began with a simple desire: to make beautiful, art pieces of stoneware by hand. Every piece reflects our commitment to mindful making.

Our studio doors are open to everyone curious about the wheel. We believe in fostering a supportive, creative space where beginners and collectors alike can connect with the ancient craft of pottery. We do not charge for wheel time, and operate a policy of stocking pieces from excellent students to fund free glazes. We are tough, we do a Keith Brymer policy with the slop bucket! Its the eco friendly way!

Our Promise

Slow Craft, Mindful Making, Creative Community.

We honor the journey of clay, from sourcing natural materials to the final small-batch glaze. Our inclusive teaching embraces every skill level, celebrating the unique story each maker brings to the studio table.

Prepare the Clay

Throw & Shape

Trim & Dry

Glaze & Fire

Begin with wedging the raw clay, removing air bubbles and creating a uniform consistency, ready for the wheel.

On the potter's wheel, each piece is centered and shaped by hand, allowing the clay to reveal its unique form.

Once leather-hard, pieces are carefully trimmed, handles are pulled, and they are left to slowly air-dry before their first firing.

Finally, our small-batch glazes are applied, and the stoneware is fired in our kiln, transforming it into a durable, beautiful object.
